Kellanved Reach Path to Ascendancy Book 3 Audible Audio Edition Ian C Esslemont John Banks Brilliance Audio Books Reviews

  • I do not understand. I enjoyed the previous two books, but this 3rd installment deserved better. Erikson built up these characters over time with so much skill and background, that they deserved more than rushed pages of origin story. This book is carpet bombed with legendary names, totally unnecessary and a waste of opportunity. If anything this book should have been 2 or 3 times as long.

The tone of Kellanved’s Reach is also a lot more teenager style rather than adult. The first part was written in an adolescent style, because the protagonists were. He could have made the following books darker as the characters grew. Instead it feels all too comical

    I miss Erikson.
  • Epic end to the Ascendancy trilogy. Malazan's exceeds the definition of 'epic'. Two sentences into the prologue, it was back to Malazan wiki to refresh characters, timelines, places, etc. After the first chapter, I'd logged over an hour in recall refreshment. It's a massive scale narrative.

The Ascendancy Trilogy is a deep dive back into eons of Malazan time. Book 1 seems to be the beginnings. Questions and hints remain about an even more distant and more mighty creation. Some have termed the trilogy as the Silmarillion of the Malazans but it's not akin. What came from space to animate this world remains unclear. Book 2 continues a forward march from the beginnings. Book 3 carries the reader into some temporal proximity with the Malazan Books of the Fallen. I could be completely wrong but that's my take at this trilogy installment.

Esslemont's writing quality is noticeably improved from his already established excellence. Here, is a new mastery of conversational quality and brevity.

Assuming you've read the Malazan's in publication date order, Kellenvad's Reach needs no introduction. Readers seem to "get" what they alone read. It's a challenge to explain the story to a non-reader. The reader will either read it or never have a clue from a readers telling.

Special kudo's to those working Malazan wiki. Without it, the nature of the whole and its massive character creations, the books and time between installments would be unintelligible.
  • Familiar characters and an important set of threads pull us on yet the key players are all younger, less experienced and knowing far less about the complex world they are growing up in. They feel less real in this telling than in the rest of the intricately wrought broad sweep of Malazan history we have been treated to previously.

The writing is sparse, telegraphic, almost urgent. As a result the rich atmosphere of roundly drawn characters and vibrant environments is not quite realised in the manner we have come to expect from Esslemont and Erikson. This tale is not the 600 to 800 epic I’ve come to expect and relish and was over too soon.

I expect to end these novels emotionally challenged with a feeling of sadness and loss counterpointing triumphs of the human spirit bravery, determination, loyalty and compassion. While a few vignettes managed this, overall I was disappointed. Reach left me wanting much more.
  • Esslemont can write an entertaining book. I will start with that. The path to ascendancy trilogy in its entirety is a fun read that moves at a quick (perhaps too quick) pace. It further explores the Malazan world and its myriad characters with a contagious zeal.
The voices given to the characters are distinct enough to distinguish them from one another and their motives and values feel real enough to be believable. Also, no contrived “deus ex machina” is unjustly thrust upon the reader.
That being said, They (and especially Kellanved’s Reach) left me less than satisfied. Esslemont has a habit of building up to a climax (convergence?) and then the story seems to stagger to a quick end.
I also found the dialogue to be basic to the point of rudimentary at times.
I don’t want to compare Esslemont to Erickson, it simply isn’t fair. Erickson excels at injecting poetry, vivid description, and pathos into his words. Esslemont does touch on humor and tugs on heart strings at times, but (and I don’t mean to be disrespectful) its eating a hotdog instead of a Steak.
Now, there’s nothing wrong with hotdogs...sometimes you’d prefer them, but it’s just at a different culinary level.
Esslemont also goes overboard with superfluous cameos from characters from other books that don’t even really make sense. Is Everyone suppose to live to be hundreds of years old now? And, do we need the backstory of Every Crimson Guard?
Also, there seem to be some inconsistencies in storytelling here. For example, did Haraj’s name just turn into Fingers? And, Where the heck is Nok at?
I know, I’m getting a little bit “Militant-Fan” here, but like Gallan told Fisher in Forge of Darkness “Should you err, the list makers will eat you alive.”
    Overall, a pretty good book.
Can’t wait for The Witness Trilogy though.
  • During the years, I have shifted from fantasy to sci-fi, but the Malazan setting never fails to enthrall me. I find myself sleeping late and ditching my gaming habits to read some more pages. And there are so many books in this setting it’s ridiculous. Highly recommended.
  • This is a book for fans of the Malazan universe. If you've read previous books you know where this story is going. I was very pleased with the result Esslemont gave us. This triology is the best work he's done so far, and I'm excited to know what his next project might be.
  • Who'd of thought that you could of gotten so many characters into a story. Lots and lots of beginning or backstorys going on in this one, besides the main characters of cancer and kellanved. Fast action throughout added with excellent storytelling. As for any other questions about this book, it's much like the early two books, very well done. Only one drawback was it seems so short. Can't wait to see where story leads to.

The Sorrow Hand A Nick Drake Novel Book 1 Audible Audio Edition Dwight Holing Steve Marvel Tantor Audio Books Reviews

  • The author, Dwight Howling, has written and extremely good mystery, which takes place in a locale that I have some personal experience and was the deciding factor in why I chose to purchase and read this book (normally as the author was someone I had never read before, I would have skipped it as it was not offered as a -Unlimited selection).

That said, I’m certainly glad that purchased it as it was definitely worth it! I did however only award it 4-Stars as there were some “carry-over” editing issues. (5-Stars is reserved for “Overall Perfection”. Granted there were very few, however there were enough to knock off a star.

This is definitely a mystery. It is not filled with action, though there is a great deal of it, and it does not depend upon “action scenes” to carry the storyline, that is carried forward from scene to scene, by an excellent overall plot, great characterization, and a writing style that many other authors may envy.

I liked the protagonist “Nick Drake” and I was able to identify with his “issues” to a great extent though his fight against his addiction to heroin, his own personal “demon”, is not one of them, though the root of its cause…I’ll just say that I too understand “walking with the dead”.

Even though I only gave this 4 Stars I do HIGHLY Recommend it. I will also be looking forward to the second book in the Nick Drake Series. Hopefully it will not be a long wait, but in the mean time I believe I’ll try another of Mr. Holing’s offerings.
  • The descriptions of an area I'm unfamiliar with is what kept me going, in spite of more than a few character tropes and obvious plot manipulations. It's as if the author started with the typical set of cardboard cutouts and then tried to give each one enough detail to lift it above the mold it was taken from. Unfortunately, these superficial trappings could not hide the bones. I did enjoy a few of the traits of the main character and handling of his struggles. I did not enjoy being hit over the head with Vietnam PTSD. These are issues that could be addressed with a bit more subtlety. Also, yes there are a few editing issues not typos but bits and pieces of plot and/or dialogue out of order. In the end, I read the entire book and would probably try another one if the author chooses to continue as a series.
  • This is the second time I have read a novel series where the hero is a wildlife Ranger. The first is of course, the Joe Pickett novels by CJ Box. They are some of my favorite works and I just finished the latest one, and look forward to many more.
So I was a little hesitant, frankly, when I read in the notes for this book that it was about a fish and wildlife character. However, this book is so different in so many ways that I was able to enjoy it for itself, and not compare it to the Pickett books.
.I’m not sure that it is written as smoothly as the Pickett books but then the style of writing, which is choppier and much more direct, fits the character and the setting to a T.
This is not Wyoming, present day, this is Oregon in the late 1960s.
This is not Joe Pickett, slightly world-weary, stridently honest, letter of the law to a fault,. Nick Drake is a Vietnam veteran, struggling with addiction and posttraumatic stress disorder. He admits to being a junkie and relying on it to still the nightmares that still haunt him over his time in country. Being from this generation, and having friends that came back from Vietnam changed in so many ways, the character of Nick Drake is pretty believable. The author weaves the flashbacks of his time in Vietnam quite well with the present day narrative. The characters are well crafted, sympathetic, and more than anything flawed in a real sense.
As the old saying goes, this could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship, with sequels a plenty. Hail and farewell, Nick Drake.
  • In this well-crafted story, Nick Drake tries to solve, with the assistance of a crusty, and colorful deputy, Pudge, the disappearance and murder of several young women while Drake fights his own personal demons from a war halfway around the world. In a style that might remind one of James Lee Burke, Dwight Holing weaves a story of intrigue and drama underpinned by Native American mysticism and Drake’s struggle to overcome PTSD. Drake is a very interesting and complex character that drives the story through flashbacks to Vietnam around the time of the Tet Offensive and his current job as a conservation officer. This page-turner will keep you guessing and riveted to the end.

    Jeffrey Miller, Bureau 39
  • Nick Drake is wonderfully complex character and I was invested in this story from the very first page. His backstory in Vietnam is beautifully (and horrifically) described. It was all very visceral and real, layered and emotional. I’m a huge fan of westerns and this felt very much like a
contemporary western married with a mystery. I love the setting and time period. Eastern Oregon in 1968. It was a time of incredible turmoil and change and the story vividly reflects all of it. The dialogue crackles with wit and honesty and the action scenes are beautifully written and really exciting. If you’re looking for a smart, thrilling, beautifully written pager-turner, look no further. I can't wait for book two.

Mountain Man Fake Fiancee A Billionaire Bad Boy Romance edition by Chloe Morgan Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

    • I really love reading books by Chloe Morgan. The characters are interesting, well-developed and have chemistry. The story is interesting, well-written with a happily ever after. In addition to receiving an arc, I purchased the book for my collection.
    • I really loved the really great story in this book. I could not put the book down till I finished reading the whole wonderful story.
Thank you so very much for writing this wonderful story.
    • A sweet fabulous read. Written very well with an ease to read that flowed nicely. It’s a smile at the end, glad for the ending it did have, and just sigh and wish. Job well done!
    • At last a book that has a story to tell, as well as all the juicy romantic bits we all love. Love this author. Happy reading!
    • Enjoyed reading this book and reading about the characters and their story. Looking forward to reading more from this author.
    • This is my first review ever. I'm very confused if I read the same book as everyone else. It's extremely short and the characters undeveloped. This story had a lot of potential but it failed to live up to the promise.

      Spoilers ahead.

So billionaire Mason instantly is attracted to poor Sam. The author randomly threw in that Sam was raped in the past and had a miscarriage and has no interest in men or babies. But the first night together they have sex? And it mentions she felt dirty and scrubbed herself clean in the shower but then the next day she had sex again? And then after one more day and sexy time she's magically in love? And then Mason goes away for a month and comes back and asks her to marry him for real. Um ok. If you're not going to delve into the implications of being raped in the past, why even mention it? It's like random plot points were thrown out but never fully developed.
    • i read this book as part of an arc program. This is the fake fiancee romance between Mason and Sam. Mason owns the ski resort and is always looking for new investments. When his mother announces she is coming to the resort for a visit, he knows he has to find someone to play his fiancee because he told her he was engaged to stop her trying to find him a wife. Sam works at the resort doing some of the renovations and is an artist who works with wood. When Mason asks her if she will play his fiancee, he offers her $40,000, and she agrees because she knows she is going to be finished working at the resort soon and will need the money. Sam agrees, but she also tells him there will be no intimate contact, even if she is wildly attracted to him. Mason agrees but soon finds it hard to keep his end of the agreement. Sam and Mason have a mutual attraction to each other and Sam reconsiders her conditions and thinks a fling will be okay. Mason really likes Sam and soon they begin to have feelings for each other, but Mason is headed for Europe soon and their fling will end. I liked this story. I liked Mason and think he really cared for Sam and didn't want to hurt her. Sam had been hurt in the past and was a little scared to try to love again, but she cared for Mason and thought he might stay. I liked this series about the ski resort and how the stories overlapped. Good one.
    • An insta love story between Mason, the owner of the ski lodge and Sam, the woman who is the temp contractor helping out with construction. He is immediately drawn to the prickly woman and when his mother decides to visit he asks her to pretend to be his fiancee to get his mom off his back and to cover his lie of already telling her that he is engaged. Sam agrees for a hefty sum and when they have to spend the night togther to make it believable for his mom...they can’t resist. But what happens when his mom leaves and the charade can stop.
A good short steamy read that gets right to the point, which I loved. I was a bit worried that Sam’s past wasn’t going to be revealed but the author did a great job of holding onto the suspense and revealing it perfectly. Only thing missing for me was, did they come clean with his mom. Otherwise a great read, with great characters, no over the top drama or others coming between them, perfect read for a break or before bed to put a smile on your face.
*I voluntarily read an advanced copy and expressed my honest opinion*
